What would it take to get you out of this stuck situation?
Long before the world heard of coaching my mother told the story of the little green frog sitting in a rut in a dirt road. Along came a rabbit and the frog told him he was stuck in the rut and could not get out. The rabbit was sympathetic but had no help to offer so went on his way. Later when the rabbit returned home on the same route he saw the frog, sitting happily on the grass verge catching flies. “Hi,” said the rabbit, “How did you get out of the rut that you couldn’t get out of then?”. “ Well” said the frog. “A truck came along and so I had to.”
A neat little story with a good old fashioned moral. We talk of two kinds of motivations, towards and away from things. That frog wasn’t going to move for a few tasty flies, insufficient ‘towards’ motivation. However, faced with the life-threatening situation of an approaching truck he used his innate ability to jump and he jumped. Result! - ‘away from’ motivation.
What’s the approaching ‘truck’ you would require to in order to get out of whatever your ‘rut’ is? I’m not suggesting drastic action necessarily, but perhaps time spent sharpening your awareness of what feels stuck – money, a personal issue, a choice involving many factors perhaps – and considering what could spur you into action would be time well spent. You don’t have to wait until something awful threatens.
