What’s important right now?
Welcome to my new blog!
The question that has kept coming up for me as I’ve been thinking about what to write is ‘What’s important right now?’, so that’s what I’m going to tackle. Complicated? No, in fact it is a way of simplifying things. Many of us write ‘to do’ lists of all the different tasks we have lined up in our businesses, work and personal life. Such as?
- Ring this and that person
- Set up that meeting
- Dentist appointment
- Do those specific paperwork tasks
- Complete that project
- Supermarket
- Stuff to charity shop
Except that I bet your list would be a lot longer and so is mine. I often don’t get to the end of it and various things just don’t get done, or get done later, in different ways or with some sort of push or pull from the outside. Asking ‘What’s important right now?’ sheds a different light on things.
Here are some possible items for a ‘What’s important right now?’ list:
- Paying the mortgage
- Keeping up with bills
- Looking after my close relationships
- Helping some people
- Mum’s birthday
- Getting the house done up
- Changing my job for one that suits me better
- Slowing down and reducing stress
- Spending more time with my children
I spent some time today aligning my two lists. It clarified things. A couple of decisions I’d been putting off were suddenly easy to make. It was just about aligning what I plan to do with want is important to me right now. Simple? Yes. Obvious? Yes. And in a complicated world, simple and obvious can be precious.
