“What becomes of the broken hearted?”

If you are like me, you’ll be looking forward to this season of “heart & flowers”. But let’s take a moment to consider that this could be a difficult period for some people we know.  Whether we look at this from a personal or a business viewpoint.

Maybe we know someone who has had some “business advances” rejected by potential clients and they are feeling that their business has been “left on the shelf”. Or, maybe feel they are being ignored or worst – even dumped!

There will be those who, for whatever reason, will be reaching for their copy
of Bridget Jones’s Diary, slipping into their comfy pyjamas and joining in
(karaoke style) with Renee Zellweger as she sings :“All by myself, I don’t want  to be, all my myself… anymore …”  as they take pleasure eating a tub of ice cream and maybe downing a bottle of wine!

“What becomes of the broken hearted” - A classic Motown song !

Originally sung by Jimmy Ruffin but has had more “covers” than my bed over the years … everyone has their favourite, a particular good version was done by Westlife (see : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsJ34LSTDbA )

By taking a few lines from the song I want to share my thoughts from  ”left and right” brain perspective.

As you know the brain has two hemispheres, and from it’s simplest view, the left side is the logical thinking view and right the creative/feelings side .
 Right Brain – creative, feeling

“As I walk this land with broken dreams, I have visions of many things,
Love’s happiness is just an illusion, Filled with sadness and confusion,
What becomes of the broken hearted, who had love that’s now departed?
I know I’ve got to find some kind of peace of mind”.

“The heart of the problem – is the problem of the heart” – our basic desire as humans is “to love and be loved”.  And, we all have our own Hopes and Dreams (Are you HD ready? see previous posting – Happy New Year)

All the old cliché’s could be rolled out here, e.g.,  “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

Whether we look at this from a business or a personal view the message is the same because we all know that “people buy people” first – before they buy a product or service. Right?

I was taking a Networking breakfast meeting one day, I asked a room of 30 attendees to “raise your hand up if you are attractive”, just 5 people responded positively.  “Isn’t it strange”, I said, “we are in a business breakfast meeting, talking business with business people, however,
when I asked you the question, you all turned that that into a “personal” question. Let me ask you again “ raise your hand if you (your business)is attractive. That time – all 30 hands were raised.

Some people may say to you : “it’s not personal – it’s business” – but if you are running your own business – it is very personal!

The quote from the song above, is taken from the position of being the middle of a dark tunnel, when we can see no light from either direction- utter despair!

The cry for help in the last line is also the answer. “I know I got to find, some kind of peace of mind”.

In the book, “Seriously, are you taking the Peace?”  We look at the fact that we are all  “triads” – we are body, mind and spirit.  The book relates this to the humble GPS unit that we know about ….

“The macro-technology behind this small piece of kit on my dashboard is incredible. There are 24 “celestial bodies” more commonly known as orbiting satellites constantly traveling around this planet of ours. It only takes three of those to pinpoint exactly where we are using longitude, latitude and altitude. None of this will work however until I push the button on the receiver in the car.”
When all three satellites work together in synergy we are guided. It’s the same with the internal micro-technology of body, mind & spirit. When we engage all in synergy we are internally guided.  I call this my PPS (Personal Positioning System).

The main character is shown that instead of looking to external things to satisfy him, first he should look within.

“You already have what you seek within you - The treasure is within you. “

Bearing this in mind, how can we expect anyone to love us if we don’t love ourselves first?  How about setting ourselves a goal of every time we look in a mirror for the next 7 days, say “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of all?”. Then shout “ME! As you smile and walk away.

Then, maybe, consider what other affirmations/mantras/positive statements you can say about you.

If you want others to love you – first, you must love yourself.

Left Brain - logical, thinking

“I walk in shadows, Searching for light, Cold and alone, No comfort in sight,
Hoping and praying for someone to care, Always moving and goin to where?

What becomes of the broken hearted, Who had love that’s now departed?
I know I’ve got to find, some kind of peace of mind.”

Consider that you are sitting in a room with a projector screen in front of you,the projector itself is behind you producing a beam of brilliant white light onto the blank screen. You are not able to turn around to see what is going on behind you.

Unknown to you, the “projectionist” places his hands in front of the beam and makes the “shadow” figure of a flying butterfly on the screen and says, “it’s a butterfly”.

What if you had never been outside of this room and seen a “real” butterfly. Your experience would be that the shape on the screen was actually a butterfly as you had been told.

Consider how you might react if you were taken outside for the first time and shown the “real world” and not just the shadows.

This is the basic premise from the Greek philosopher Plato’s  – “Allegory of the Cave”.

There is so much more going around us than what we see with our own eyes.

When we do see - our brain and our own experience filters out so much.

If we “get out of our cave” experience we will see things as they are and not just the shadows. The “true” light and not a dim imitation of projected light can enlighten us all.

If you want to do a little more research, an internet search of “allegory of the cave” will give you loads to consider. Or, why not do a similar search on “youtube” to see other interpretations.

Love & Light,

The Peace Man
