Testing the Law of Attraction to my work commute!

Up until recently I was known in my office for arriving 30-40 minutes late to work - usually red-faced and cursing. I would tell anybody who would listen about my nightmare hour-long commute, the late running trains, the screaming school kids, the inefficiency of London Transport etc. Not very fun for my colleagues and not very good for my reliability!

Here was my typical day:

I would leave the house and immediately be thinking about the commute ahead. I would say to myself "how late will the bus be this morning?", or "I hate those rude, screaming school kids". I would start to feel the anger rising, my heart beating faster and anxiety about getting to work on time. Once at the bus stop, I would tap my foot impatiently, exchange eye rolls with other miserable commuters and sigh loudly every couple of minutes. Some days it would take 20 mins for the next bus, a couple of days I waited 40 minutes! Often I would call the complaint line and yell at some poor customer service person about the incompetence of London Transport. Then inevitably I would miss my connecting train......ARGH

Imagine how productive my mornings were at work.

I happen to come across the movie The Secret, which talks about the Law of Attraction. A friend of mine who was always annoyingly upbeat recommended it. I noticed that he never complained about anything and would laugh at my stressed out rants. He explained that the Law of Attraction is based on these simple concepts:

 - what you think about the most, you'll get
 - your brain doesn't know the difference between a positive or negative thought
 - you can attract anything into your life

For those who thinks that sounds a little "woo hoo" and crazy, think about it in these simple terms - think of a time when you really wanted a particular car, watch or item of clothing. You think about, you pine about it - you maybe put a little picture of it on your notice board. Suddenly, you start to see your desired object everywhere - driving around, in magazines, on other people. Coincidence? Maybe.

My friend tells a great story about this. She pined after this particular kind of car for ages and her and her husband were saving up for it. She heard that if you visualise what you want, it will help you get it. So she decided to put a picture of this desired car on her fridge. Problem was that she couldn't find the exact colour she wanted so found a picture that was near enough. She saved diligently for this car until she could finally order it through her local car dealership, specifying the exact colour she wanted. When she arrived to pick the car up, the car dealer was embarrased and apologetic - the car had been delivered, but in the wrong colour. My friend took one look at the car and laughed. Of course, it had been delivered in the exact colour of the car in the picture on her fridge. She had looked at it and dreamed about it for so long, that the universe delivered exactly what she had asked for.

I'd always believed in the Law of Attraction when it came to financial or love matters, but I hadn't connected into anything else in my life, especially those little niggling things that annoy me so much (and I'm a Virgo, so there are a lot of those niggling things!). Could just thinking positively about my commute change anything about it?

Worth a try.

Here's what I did. I decided that every day for a month I would force myself to think "I never wait longer than five minutes for a bus".  I banished all thoughts all negative morning thoughts and took along a book to distract me. I started with "Think and Grow Rich"! I tried smiling at stressed out commuters at the bus stop (of course they thought I was crazy!). I tried to think of happy things as I waited for the bus, I sent nice vibes to London Transport.

The result - it's been three months now and I never wait longer than five minutes for a bus! Is that true? Well, not every day but much more often than not, and then I just smile and think "well, that's funny. I usually wait about five minutes for a bus - it must be coming along soon". I get to the office on time - and actually much earlier than I used to. I come in and show people "normal Denise" instead of "psychotic Denise" and boy do people like her better!

"Well!" you scoff "it must be another factor - maybe the buses have become more efficient, less roadwork or something like that". Maybe you're right. I don't care, I'm just happy I don't have the urge to kill innocent bystanders anymore. That's gotta be worth it, right?

This small attitude shift has really changed my day, not to mention my poor overstressed nervous system. Yes, occasionally I find myself tutting, but it's easy to stop.

What's happening in your life that could change for the better? Of course, we'd all like a million dollars to come plopping into our lap from the universe, but sometimes it's a small thing that really drives you crazy. Something your partner, or one of your kids, or even a pet does that really makes you mad!

I've got a challenge for you  - just change your attitude for a couple of weeks and see what happens. They might not completely change their behaviour, but I bet it bugs you less.

So, one annoying thing off the list - watch this space for the other 999,999 things I've got to ask the universe for now!
