The Business Group

Back in Harness

Hi fellow writers-and-readers,

I don't know about you but I'm gearing up to get going after the summer.  Up here in Scotland, we've not had much of that so being positive about the approach of autumn is a challenge especially with crunching noises about credit echoing around!

The Waiting Room: Part 2 – ‘Hurry Up’!

It’s a cliché to say that we live in a speeded-up world. IT systems and internet connections are marketed for their speed.  We tap our fingers impatiently on the desk if the PC is running slowly or we’re forced to use an older model. Used to a state of the art service station, we fidget at the traffic lights or fret if we have to fill up at an older slower pump. And the difference will likely be only a few minutes.

Building your brand using online forums

Building your brand using online forums -

How many online forums do you subscribe to?  And within your list, how many are you a regular contributor to?  Forums can be extremely useful as a way of building your personal brand in that particular sector. Whilst it can be time consuming to read and respond to postings, it is an easy way to start to infiltrate almost subconsciously into the minds of the users.

Walking the talk - how to be a great role model

Walking the talk - how to be a great role model -

I expect that many of you have had this frustration at some time in the recent past. People who say they will do something and then do not deliver.  This can be a blight in small businesses are well as large organisations and can lead to staff, colleagues, suppliers and customers being disillusioned when a leader's subsequent actions contradict their initial words.

Where are the women?

Where are the women? -

I regularly meet loads of women business owners and have recently been required to trawl through my database of contacts to find businesses in certain sectors: couriers, office furniture retailers, security, market research and recruitment.

Eliminating the Chatterbox

Forget press coverage, Internet PR rules!!

Inevitably new clients come to me stating that they want to get into the Sunday Times, Cosmo, The FT or some other popular publication. However, sometimes what would be more effective, especially if they have limited time, is to build a PR campaign around the web. Unlike traditional PR where people either have to remember your name and Google for your website, or snip out the piece about you, online PR means that all they have to do is click through to you. It might not be as glamorous, but it can be much more effective.

Thinking Big from the Start

Thinking Big from the Start -

If you are thinking of growing a business you need to have belief, capability and contacts and this is the same for both men and women.  However, there are some reasons why women find it more difficult and I explore these in my first podcast (5 minutes duration).  Have a listen and let me know if you agree or not.

Build A Judo Business

Half my immediate family trained in Judo and excelled in competition. I was always fascinated by the way in which my younger brother and sister (who were small for their age) were able to throw much bigger opponents with seemingly little effort.

He was huge.
