How to Stop Flogging a Dead Horse - The Business Owner's Guide to Creating Happy Endings

First Published

Who is this book written for?

Small business owners (and even tall ones) plus anyone who knows it's time to move on but needs a kick start.

How much did you know about your subject before writing this book? In other words, what qualifies you to write this book?

Lots. My working and personal life has been a series of changes. I'm well known for not letting the grass grow under my feet. The business advice is based on my own experience and that of my friends and contacts whose wisdom I have sifted to find the nuggets that work for me.

What makes your book different?

One reader says that it's the first she's read that talks about the reality of things going wrong. Plenty around on 'going for it' and reaching for the stars. This book is down to earth and practical, acknowledging that running a small business isn't always a bed of roses. It's also a good laugh!

Why did you write this book?

I discovered in conversation with a group of coaches that I was an expert on 'endings'. They challenged me to write the book. I researched the literature and found that there was little written specifically about how to round off well and move on into a new future.

What kind of research did you do for your book?

I sent out questionnaires to other business owners and asked people for their stories about the challenges they took up. eg 'What was the deciding factor in making the change?' 'What sacrifices did you have to make?'

Tell us the single most important thing we'll learn from your book...

We need to let go in order to move on!

How would you describe yourself?

A traveller on life's trip discovering that I take myself with me wherever I go so I'd better be good company!

What's your greatest achievement so far?

Probably the one I know nothing about by which I mean that the biggest difference we make in the world is not the achievement we're proud of but the unknown 'random act of kindness' we're unaware of.

Who are your role models/influences and why?

What's the most exciting thing that's happened to you as a result of writing your book?

Having a well respected international coach and writer give me a witty review on Amazon

What are you working on now?

Aha - it's still a secret. Watch this space!

What else do you do?

I coach people keen to make changes in their working and personal lives. I facilitate awaydays for teams in the corporate, education and voluntary sectors and I support groups to communicate productively and harmoniously.
I write plays, prose and poetry. I'm about to have a play published in 'Scottish Plays for Schools' Hodder Gibson/Association for Scottish Literary Studies
